A friend of mine from New Orleans once used the term lagniappe (pronounced LAN-yap) to describe an extra "make-up" semester her university was offering to help students get back on track shortly after Hurricane Katrina. She said the word lagniappe means "a little something extra", usually referring to a little gift a merchant might add to a customer's order for good measure - a sort of "just because" gesture. Well, the word (and the concept) has stuck with me since then. So, for Valentine's Day (or should I say the Saturday before), the beautiful, large, ripe strawberries in the market inspired me to offer a lagniappe to our guests in the form of chocolate-covered strawberries.
Just a little something extra!
