Winter Festivals in the Monadnock Region

Keene may be best known for their Pumpkin Festival in the Fall, but this Saturday they are hosting their 9th Annual Ice and Snow Festival.  In addition to ice and snow carving competitions and a snowboarding rail jam, the event will feature entertainment with a preview of "Kiss Me Kate" in the Central Square gazebo and a strolling barbershop quartet.  New this year, the festival has added a snowball throwing clinic for all ages run by the organizers of the Keene Swamp Bats, the local summer college baseball team.  This sounds like a lot of fun and who knows, perhaps it could turn into an organized snowball fight!  :)

This Saturday also kicks off the first weekend of February Farm Days at Stonewall Farm in Keene.  Every Saturday this month, the farm will be offering good ol' fashioned sleigh rides with their Clydesdales, Prince and Magic.  If you're looking for exercise, you can borrow snowshoes (limited number available) and explore their 130 acres of conservation land.  When you're done, you can chase the chill away roasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate or cider by the campfire.

P.S.  With tomorrow being Groundhog Day, we'll be waiting to find out what Punxatawny Phil's weather prognostication will be for this year.  Although I am always happy for Spring to come, this Winter has been really nice.  We've had just enough snow, plenty of sunshine, not too many frigid days, and even a few warmer days thrown in for good measure!  I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
