Little Shop, Little Shop of Horrors...

It's hard to get the tune out of your head once it is in there. Last night we went to opening night of Little Shop of Horrors at the Peterborough Players. It was a fun time, performed and presented well, and the cast received a standing ovation at the end.

For anyone who enjoys theater, the Peterborough Players is a wonderful place to see a show. Little Shop of Horrors will be playing for the next few weeks and will be followed by Heartbreak House, Copenhagen, and David Sedaris' Santaland Diaries.

New things around the B&B

There are always projects to be done around the house or things we could improve. This summer's big project was getting the front and West side of the house painted...yes the same color. Who thought two sides of the house could take over a month! The painters had the two sides stripped down to the bare wood in about two weeks but just as they finished stripping (early June) the rains were starting. We think it rained 30 out of 35 days and the painters had no chance to sand, prime, or wasn't until after July 4th weekend that the sun finally reappeared for more than one consecutive days and they were able to get back to work.

We think the painters were just as happy to finish the B&B as we were but we have to admit...we think it looks pretty darn good! What do you think?

We didn't want to ignore the back so we purchased new furniture for the River Deck that expands our seating out there. It has an umbrella and is very much so that we have more guests interested in eating breakfast outside (the weather and number of guests has to be just right) and taking their lunch out there as well.

Just as a teaser, we have a new restaurant in town. The owner of Pearl has opened Cantine, our first Mexican restaurant and we are excited because if he does as well with Cantine as he does with Pearl it will be excellent. Will report after we have had a chance to go.

Kayaking MacDowell Lake

Kayaking MacDowell Lake

This past weekend, Eastern Mountain Sports hosted Kayak Demos as one of the 2009 Summer Interpretive Programs at Edward MacDowell Lake. The timing worked out just right for me to get out for about hour in the middle of the afternoon on Sunday to give it a try. The Park Ranger set me up with a life jacket, paddle and kayak and off I went to explore the lake. It was an absolutely beautiful day to be out on the water. And it was so easy and so close! Now I truly understand why so many of the cars we see on the roads around here have kayak carriers on their roofs. There are lakes and ponds all over the Monadnock region just waiting to be explored. And if you don't own your own, Eastern Mountain Sports and other outfitters in the area rent the kayaks and all the necessary equipment you need (including tie-downs and foam blocks for transporting the kayak).

Although it doesn't appear that EMS will be hosting other demo days at MacDowell Lake this summer, the list of other Interpretive Programs at the lake include dam tours, guided nature walks, and even a live night raptor presentation on Sunday, August 16 from 5-7 PM.

Fourth of July Spirit!

Peterborough Fireworks 1 - 2009 Peterborough Fireworks 2 - 2009

There was plenty of Fourth of July spirit in the Monadnock region this weekend with fireworks celebrations three nights in a row. Between our guests and ourselves, we had representation at each celebration! To kick off the weekend, on Friday night, July 3rd, the town of Hancock featured a reading of the Declaration of Independence by local children, live music, and of course, fireworks. On Saturday, the town of Dublin celebrated with fireworks over Dublin Lake. And on Sunday, Peterborough's celebration included food (sponsored by local nonprofits), live music (by Dave and the Daddy O's), and some really nice fireworks! The weather was perfect (a little chilly, but not too bad) and clear skies made for a great show! It was just what we needed after all the rain we had in June.
